Hello, I’m Heather Powers.  I live in San Antonio, Texas working as an artist and designer.  Along with illustrating for the children’s market, I’m a well-published jewelry designer and beadmaker. I'm currently under contract for my first jewelry design/craft book with Kalmbach.

I studied painting, drawing and printmaking at Kendall College of Art & Design where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.  During this time, I discovered my love for printmaking, which is my medium of choice.  I love the bold lines and textures that are created through the printmaking process.

I’m a dedicated member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers & Illustrators and volunteer as the Regional Advisor for the Southwest Texas Chapter.  I’ve had the privilege of taking two master classes with Tomie dePaola during the SCBWI’s national conferences.  In 2008 I was awarded the Tomie dePaola Portfolio Award.

My Process
I use a variety of blockprinting and stamping techniques to create my images.  Most of my illustrations are hand-colored with oil pastels.  My newer work is created by printing several blocks in different colors for a more retro style.  Thanks to modern technology, I use materials that allow me to carve my blocks quickly and meet tight deadlines.  My work can be delivered digitally if necessary.
